Martensitic grades are specifically valued because their properties can be significantly modified through heat treatment.
Excellent mechanical strength after suitable heat treatment.
Higher carbon martensitic grades such as 420 and 440C can achieve high hardness after hardening.
Suitable for cutting tools, blades, bearings and other components exposed to wear.
Generally provides useful corrosion resistance, although standard martensitic grades typically have lower corrosion resistance than 304/316 austenitic stainless steels.
Unlike conventional austenitic grades, many martensitic stainless steels can be hardened through heat treatment.
Annealed material can be machined more easily before final hardening and tempering.
